“Should I take CUET UG or CUET PG?” is one of the most common questions in our enquiry inbox — and almost always asked by students who don’t realise these are two completely separate examinations with different syllabi, different participating universities, different fee structures, and different career outcomes. This guide gives you the side-by-side breakdown, eligibility map, and a decision framework to pick the right one.
The 30-Second Summary
- CUET UG = entrance for Bachelor’s programmes (BA, BSc, BCom, BBA, BTech in select universities). Taken after Class 12.
- CUET PG = entrance for Master’s programmes (MA, MSc, MCom, MBA, MTech, integrated PhD). Taken after / during the final year of Bachelor’s.
If you are a Class 12 student, you take CUET UG. If you are a final-year graduation student, you take CUET PG. They are not interchangeable.

CUET UG
- Class 12 pass from any recognised Indian board (CBSE, ICSE, State Board, NIOS).
- Class 12 appearing students may apply; admission is conditional on result.
- No upper age limit at the NTA level. Universities may impose their own (e.g., DU does not, JNU does not, AMU programme-specific).
- Subject-specific eligibility: BTech may require Physics + Maths in Class 12; BCom may require Mathematics or Accountancy in Class 12 — depends on the university.
CUET PG
- Bachelor’s degree (3 or 4 years, depending on programme structure) from a recognised university.
- Final-year UG students may apply; admission is conditional on degree completion.
- Minimum percentage / CGPA varies by university (typically 50% for General, 45% for SC/ST, 40% for PWD).
- Subject-specific entry: MA Economics may require Economics or Mathematics in graduation; MSc Physics requires BSc Physics, etc.
Syllabus Difference

Which Should You Take?
This is not a choice. It is a function of where you are in your academic journey:
- If you are in Class 12 (2026–27): Take CUET UG 2027.
- If you are in the final year of a Bachelor’s degree (graduating in 2027): Take CUET PG 2027.
- If you have already graduated and are working but want to pursue PG: Take CUET PG (no upper age limit at NTA).
- If you are a CUET UG repeater (took 2026, want better score): Take CUET UG 2027 again. There is no limit on attempts.
What’s Common to Both
- Same conducting body (NTA).
- Same equipercentile normalisation across shifts.
- Same CBT delivery mode from 2027.
- Both score reports are released individually for each paper. Universities take the score for the relevant subject(s) they require.
- Score validity: 1 admission cycle only.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q1. Can I take both CUET UG and CUET PG in the same year?
Only if you are eligible for both — which is rare. A graduating student technically appears for PG. Class 12 students are not eligible for PG.
Q2. Is CUET PG harder than CUET UG?
Yes, in absolute difficulty. PG papers are at Bachelor’s level and assume domain depth. But CUET UG is more competitive in pure numbers — 13.5 lakh aspirants vs ~5 lakh for PG.
Q3. Does CUET PG have a General Test paper?
No. CUET PG is single-subject. There is no general aptitude paper.
Q4. Can I take CUET PG with a 3-year degree if my target university wants a 4-year degree?
You can take the exam, but admission depends on the university’s eligibility rule. JNU now requires 4-year UG for some PG programmes per UGC’s 2024 framework. Check programme-wise.
Q5. Are coaching books for UG useful for PG?
Largely no. PG syllabus is degree-level. Use Bachelor’s-degree textbooks plus past PG question papers. UG materials only help if you have weak Class 12 fundamentals.
Bottom Line
UG vs PG is not a strategic choice — it’s an eligibility fact. Take the one your current academic stage qualifies you for. The harder strategic decisions come within each: which subjects, which universities, what cutoff to target. Start with our CUET Eligibility 2026, then pick subjects via the Subject Combination Advisor, and lock your university list using the CUET Cutoff database.
