CUET PG vs CUET UG 2026: Score Validity, Eligibility & Admission Path Compared

Updated 22 May 2026 · By the Ready For Exam editorial desk · Helpline 7033005444

Two exams, almost identical-looking names, run by the same NTA, used by the same DU/BHU/JMI universe — and yet they admit you to entirely different academic worlds. CUET UG 2026 (running 11–31 May) gates undergraduate admission. CUET PG 2026 (whose result was declared on 24 April 2026) gates postgraduate admission. Mixing them up is the single biggest reason candidates lose a year.

This guide is the cleanest side-by-side we could write for the 2026 cycle — eligibility, score validity, admission path, reservation rules, and which one to write if you are stuck deciding.

The 60-second cheat sheet

The big structural differences

1. UG is multi-subject; PG is single-subject

CUET UG lets you pick up to 5 papers (one language, up to 4 domain subjects, plus the General Test). Universities then pick the best 3 or 4 to build a programme-specific aggregate. CUET PG is one subject paper aligned to the master’s programme you want.

2. UG result builds a multi-programme application; PG is locked to one subject family

With CUET UG scores, you can apply to BCom, BA Eco, BMS, BBA — all from one set of papers. With CUET PG, the subject code you wrote dictates which PG programmes you can apply for. There is little room to course-correct.

3. UG normalisation runs over 21 days of shifts; PG over fewer

Because CUET UG is delivered across 11–31 May, the shift count for popular subjects (English, General Test, Business Studies) can hit double digits. Normalisation matters more here than in PG, where most subjects fit in two or three shifts.

4. Reservation rules are common; admission cut-offs are not

SC 15%, ST 7.5%, OBC-NCL 27%, EWS 10%, PwBD 5%, supernumerary CW/OCI applies to both. But cut-offs are wildly different by programme — CUET PG MA Economics at DU typically closes well above 98 percentile, while CUET UG BA Political Science can close at 95.

5. Re-attempt rules

You can write CUET UG only after Class 12 in the same calendar year — there is no “attempt limit” but it is tied to year-of-eligibility. CUET PG has no formal attempt cap; you can write it any year after Bachelor’s.

Should I write both in 2026?

Only one of the two is relevant per stage of your life. If you finished Class 12 in 2026 (or are finishing): CUET UG. If you finished Bachelor’s in 2025/2026: CUET PG.

The genuine overlap is at the borderline — final-year UG students who want to keep both Bachelor’s-redo and PG options open. We do not recommend this unless you have a clear academic reason; preparation bandwidth is finite.

How the same university uses the two scores differently

Delhi University

  • UG admission: CSAS UG portal at admission.uod.ac.in, programme-specific best-of-3 or best-of-4 CUET UG normalised marks.
  • PG admission: CSAS PG portal at pgadmission.uod.ac.in, CUET PG single-subject normalised mark.

BHU

  • UG: CUET UG normalised score directly used.
  • PG: CUET PG subject-paper score; some programmes add a departmental interview.

JMI & JNU

  • Both UG and PG admissions accept CUET scores; JNU PG also accepts viva for select programmes (research streams).

What stays the same

  • Negative marking: -1 per wrong, +5 per right (verify with the current information bulletin for any 2026 change).
  • NTA conducts both in CBT mode.
  • Normalisation methodology — equi-percentile, same as we explained in depth here.
  • Score card structure — subject normalised marks + percentile.

What changes for foreign / OCI candidates

  • UG: OCI candidates use the same CSAS UG portal under supernumerary category.
  • PG: OCI candidates apply via the dedicated international admissions cell at most universities, in parallel with CSAS PG.

Common confusions we hear at the helpline

  • “I wrote CUET PG, can I use that score for BCom at DU?” — No. UG admission requires CUET UG.
  • “My CUET UG 2025 score — can I use it for 2026 admission?” — No. Scores are valid only for that admission year.
  • “Can I sit CUET PG in my final year of Bachelor’s?” — Yes, provisionally. You must submit your Bachelor’s mark sheet before admission confirmation.
  • “Is the answer-key objection process the same?” — Mechanism is identical (3–4 day window, paid objection). See our answer-key objection guide.
