4-Step Preparation Strategy
- Master Ecology & Pollution (Weeks 1–3): These two areas combined carry 55% weightage. Draw energy flow diagrams, learn all biogeochemical cycles, and create a pollution comparison chart (type, sources, pollutants, effects, remediation). Memorise BOD/COD significance and eutrophication stages.
- Complete Biodiversity & Natural Resources (Weeks 3–5): Memorise India’s 4 biodiversity hotspots with key species. Learn all national parks with their states and flagship species. Create a renewable vs non-renewable energy comparison table. Know JFM, Social Forestry, and watershed management concepts.
- Laws, SDGs & Climate Change (Weeks 5–7): Make a chart: Act name, year, key provisions. Memorise all 17 SDGs with numbers and one-line descriptions. For climate change, learn all 6 greenhouse gases, Montreal Protocol vs Paris Agreement differences, and India’s 8 NAPCC missions by name.
- Mock Tests & Current Affairs (Weeks 7–8): Environmental Studies questions often reference current events. Read recent COP outcomes, new environmental policies, and wildlife conservation news. Take 2 mock tests weekly and focus on eliminating silly errors in factual recall.
5 Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Confusing food chain with food web: A food chain is a single linear pathway; a food web is an interconnected network of food chains. NTA tests this distinction with diagram-based questions.
- Mixing up in-situ and ex-situ conservation: In-situ = conserving species in their natural habitat (national parks, sanctuaries, biosphere reserves). Ex-situ = conserving outside natural habitat (zoos, seed banks, gene banks). Learn 3 examples of each.
- Not memorising Act years: Wildlife Protection Act (1972), Water Act (1974), Forest Conservation Act (1980), Air Act (1981), Environment Protection Act (1986). NTA specifically tests year-Act matching.
- Ignoring SDG numbers: Simply knowing the 17 goals is not enough. Questions ask “Which SDG relates to clean water?” (Answer: SDG 6). Memorise at least the goal number with its title for all 17.
- Treating Ozone Depletion and Global Warming as the same: Ozone depletion is caused by CFCs (Montreal Protocol addresses it). Global warming is caused by CO2, CH4, N2O (Paris Agreement addresses it). Different causes, different solutions, different treaties.
