BHU Admission via CUET 2026 — Cutoffs, Courses & Process

Complete guide to Banaras Hindu University admission through CUET UG 2026. Course-wise cutoffs, admission process, seat matrix, and preparation strategy for India’s largest residential university.

About Banaras Hindu University

Banaras Hindu University (BHU), established in 1916 by Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya, is one of Asia’s largest residential universities. Spread across a sprawling 1,300-acre campus in the holy city of Varanasi, BHU is ranked #6 among universities in the NIRF 2025 rankings and is an Institution of National Importance.

BHU is unique in its breadth — it houses 140+ departments across 14 faculties, including the prestigious IIT (BHU) for engineering (which has separate admission through JEE Advanced), the Institute of Medical Sciences (IMS), and renowned faculties for Arts, Science, Commerce, Agriculture, Fine Arts, Law, and Ayurveda.

BHU’s key strengths include its world-class science research facilities, the iconic Vishwanath Temple within the campus, affordable hostel accommodation for most students, and a deeply academic environment far removed from the commercial pressures of metro cities. The university produces some of India’s top civil servants, scientists, and artists.

Courses Offered via CUET

BHU uses CUET scores for admission to most undergraduate programmes. Unlike DU, BHU conducts its own counselling through its admission portal (not CSAS). Here are the major programmes:

CourseRequired CUET SubjectsApprox. Seats
BA (Arts)English/Hindi + relevant domain subjects2,500+
B.Sc (Science streams)English + Physics/Chemistry/Biology/Maths1,800+
B.ComEnglish + Accountancy + Business Studies/Maths600+
BBAEnglish + Mathematics + any domain120
B.Sc (Agriculture)English + Physics + Chemistry + Biology/Maths200+
BA LLB (Integrated)English + Legal Studies/any 2 domains120
BFA (Fine Arts)CUET score + BHU practical/portfolio test80+
B.P.EdEnglish + Physical Education + any domain60
Shastri (Sanskrit courses)Sanskrit/Hindi + relevant domains300+

Important: BHU uses a per-subject scoring system (each CUET subject out of 250) for many programmes, rather than a combined 3-subject score like DU. Check the BHU admission brochure for the exact subject combination required for your desired programme.

CUET Cutoff 2025

BHU cutoffs are calculated per subject (out of 250) for most programmes. Below are approximate cutoffs from the 2025 admission cycle:

CourseGeneralOBCSC/ST
BA (Arts — Popular subjects)165–180145–165120–145
BA (Arts — Less competitive)140–160125–145100–125
B.Sc (Maths / Physics)180–195160–180135–160
B.Sc (Chemistry / Biology)175–190155–175130–155
B.Com170–190150–170125–150
BBA175–195155–175130–155
B.Sc (Agriculture)165–185145–165120–145
BA LLB170–185150–170125–150

Key Difference from DU: BHU cutoffs are significantly lower than DU because BHU calculates merit per subject (out of 250) rather than combining 3 subjects (out of 750). A CUET score of 175/250 (70%) is competitive for most BHU programmes.

Admission Process

BHU has its own admission portal — it does not use DU’s CSAS system. Here is the step-by-step process:

  1. Register for CUET UG 2026 on the NTA website and appear for the exam in the required subjects.
  2. Register on the BHU Admission Portal (bhuonline.in) after CUET results are declared. This is a separate registration from CUET.
  3. Fill programme preferences on the BHU portal. You can choose multiple programmes within BHU based on your CUET subjects.
  4. Merit List Release: BHU releases programme-wise merit lists based on CUET scores. Multiple rounds of counselling are conducted.
  5. Document Verification: Report to BHU campus with original documents (Class 10 & 12 marksheets, CUET scorecard, category certificate, migration certificate, photos).
  6. Fee Payment & Hostel Allocation: Pay the admission fee (₹5,000–15,000 for most programmes) and apply for hostel accommodation. BHU hostels are heavily subsidised.

Hostel Tip: BHU has excellent hostel facilities at minimal cost (₹1,000–3,000/year). However, hostel seats are limited. Apply early and mention any preference for a specific hostel during the admission process.

Score Targets & Strategy

TargetCUET Score per Subject (out of 250)What You Can Expect
Top Tier195–250B.Sc (Maths/Physics), BBA, B.Com — guaranteed admission
Comfortable175–195Most Science and Commerce programmes, popular Arts subjects
Competitive155–175OBC category in top programmes, General in less competitive ones
Borderline130–155SC/ST category, Sanskrit-medium programmes, some Arts subjects

Strategy for BHU: Since BHU uses per-subject scores, focus on mastering 2–3 subjects deeply rather than spreading thin across many. NCERT-level preparation with thorough PYQ practice (2022–2025) is sufficient. BHU values consistent scoring across subjects over a single high score.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does BHU use the CSAS portal like DU?

No. BHU has its own admission portal (bhuonline.in). You must register separately on the BHU portal after your CUET results are out. The CSAS portal is only for Delhi University.

Is IIT BHU admission through CUET?

No. IIT (BHU) Varanasi admits through JEE Advanced for B.Tech/IDD programmes. CUET-based admission at BHU is for non-engineering programmes like BA, B.Sc, B.Com, BBA, Agriculture, Fine Arts, Law, etc.

What CUET score is needed for B.Sc at BHU?

For B.Sc (Science) at BHU, you typically need 175–195 per subject (out of 250) for the General category. This translates to roughly 70–78% in each subject. OBC cutoffs are about 15–20 marks lower.

Is hostel accommodation guaranteed at BHU?

BHU provides hostel accommodation to a majority of admitted students, but it is not 100% guaranteed. Priority is given to outstation students. Hostel fees are extremely affordable (₹1,000–3,000/year), making BHU one of the most economical universities in India.

Can I apply to both DU and BHU with the same CUET score?

Yes, absolutely. Your CUET score is accepted by all participating Central Universities. You can simultaneously apply to DU (via CSAS), BHU (via bhuonline.in), JNU, Jamia, AMU, and any other CUET-accepting university.
