Indian badminton duo Ashwini Ponnappa and Jwala Gutta upstaged the top-seeded Dutch pair of Eefje Muskens and Selena Piek to clinch the Canada Open women’s doubles title. The third-seeded Indian pair won the contest 21-19, 21-16 in a span of 35 minutes. Incidentally, this is also the South Indian pair’s first title win following their reunion, after they parted ways at the end of the 2012 London Olympics. The journey of the duo started in 2010 when they paired up to contest for the first time at the Commonwealth Games in 2010, and they soon made history by bagging the first gold
medal for India in the event, by beating a much-higher ranked Singaporean pair of Shinta Mulia Sari and Yao Lei. Ashwini, 25, and Jwala, 31, went on to create more history as they became the first Indian pair to win a medal at the Badminton World Championship in London the following year. The shuttlers won a bronze medal to beat Vita Marrisa and Nadya Melati of Indonesia. Source: NDTV Sports
