Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis on 31st July announced the construction of a 800-km long expressway that will directly connect Mumbai with Nagpur, the second capital of the state. The project, in partnership with the Centre, will cost around Rs 30,000 crore and is expected to be completed by September 2019, Fadnavis said. After the expressway, the road travel time between Nagpur and Mumbai is expected to come down to ten hours. He further said that like the Mumbai-Pune expressway, the new super expressway would have six lanes (four in the first phase) and will have controlled access for vehicles (where two wheelers will be restricted). This would be a six-lane road and in the first phase a four lane road would be constructed. This decision will benefit the people of Vidarbha, Marathwada and north Maharashtra, besides Mumbai, and was in line with the Bharatiya Janata Party-Shiv Sena governments efforts to take development to the remotest parts of the state.
